My home. My home was burning. All around me, the flames of the invaders were overtaking the trees. The sacred grove had already been burned, the beautiful carved monument to our ancestors had been the first to catch fire, after they had filled in the healing well during the night with stones and dirt, so that the fire could not be put out.

I should have stayed anyway and tried. As an earth fae, I could have maybe smothered the embers. But I was with child, and I had to warn the others that the Shades had found us. The animals were right, dark fae had crept out of the darkest shadows and everything they touched died.

I stopped to catch my breath, crouching to the ground for a moment and rested my hand on the earth. Looking around to make sure no one was near, I sent out the faintest of tremors, a warning to animals near and far to gather their families and run for their lives. The trees, I could do nothing about. Dear gods, the trees. I wanted to weep for them, but there was no time. If the Shades had any earth fae with them, I might have just alerted them to my position.

I had to run.

“Siri, where are you girl? What are you doing? Why can’t I find you? Sullivan Carey is looking for you.” Far away, I could hear Mikael calling to me. “He knows what you did to his daughter. We are coming for you. You can run, but we will find you.”

I had to run.

I had to run! I leapt up and began streaking through the forest, leaping over fallen trees and small streams, faster, and faster, running for the Great Hall.

“You can’t run from us, Siri!”

Ahead, I saw the gleam of river through the trees, glinting in the moonlight.

“We will find you, Siri! Where are you! Siri!”
